This article deals with the theoretical and the didactic conditions that guarantee the quality and the efficiency, in terms of learning, of problem solving situations in early childhood education. It examines in particular the role of teachers as mediators between children previous knowledge and experiences, and the mathematical concepts, underlining the importance of the real and authentic problem solving situations.
