Guerra en El Paraíso (1991) by Carlos Montemayor is a work of non-fiction that critically intervenes in the historical memory of rural guerrilla movements in Mexico during the “Dirty War” (1960–1980). Based on extensive documentary and testimonial research, the novel constructs a counter-narrative to the official state discourse, shedding light on repression, torture, and forced disappearances. Through a fragmented and polyphonic narrative structure, Montemayor blends testimony, fiction, and archival materials, situating Lucio Cabañas within a symbolic space that interweaves territory, politics, and resistance.
