In-hospital transportation of critically ill patients requiring ventilation support is a high-risk procedure. The main reasons to move a patient outside his/her clinical setting are the transfer to a different level of care, diagnostic procedures, surgical or other invasive interventions that cannot be performed at the bedside. Patients undergoing noninvasive ventilation represent a highly challenging population, requiring special attention and care to avoid severe preventable adverse events.

Abstract

In-hospital transportation of critically ill patients requiring ventilation support is a high-risk procedure. The main reasons to move a patient outside his/her clinical setting are the transfer to a different level of care, diagnostic procedures, surgical or other invasive interventions that cannot be performed at the bedside. Patients undergoing noninvasive ventilation represent a highly challenging population, requiring special attention and care to avoid severe preventable adverse events.
