The essay starts from the observation that the evolution of modern society facilitates the emergence of conflicts, and potential conflicts, in different and increasingly specific social contexts. Therefore it argues that in addition to precise empirical investigations, it is necessary to develop an appropriately abstract theory of conflict. For this purpose it compares two paradigms that are situated at the beginning and at the end of modernity: the pattern emerging in Hobbes's Leviathan on the one hand, and that derivable from the social theory of Niklas Luhmann on the other hand. Finally, some conclusions are drawn concerning the form and function of conflict in contemporary society.

Abstract
The essay starts from the observation that the evolution of modern society facilitates the emergence of conflicts, and potential conflicts, in different and increasingly specific social contexts. Therefore it argues that in addition to precise empirical investigations, it is necessary to develop an appropriately abstract theory of conflict. For this purpose it compares two paradigms that are situated at the beginning and at the end of modernity: the pattern emerging in Hobbes's Leviathan on the one hand, and that derivable from the social theory of Niklas Luhmann on the other hand. Finally, some conclusions are drawn concerning the form and function of conflict in contemporary society.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
