The early history of the computer industry was dominated by a single firm, IBM, and the computing platform it launched, the System/360. In subsequent years IBM’s dominance waned, but the emergence of dominant platforms remained the principle shaping competitive dynamics and the appearance of a concentrated industry structure. In such a context two main strategic factors underpin the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage: the entry mode and the nature of expenditures spurring technological innovation. The importance of these features reverberates in the unfolding era of cloud computing and mobile devices.

Abstract
The early history of the computer industry was dominated by a single firm, IBM, and the computing platform it launched, the System/360. In subsequent years IBM’s dominance waned, but the emergence of dominant platforms remained the principle shaping competitive dynamics and the appearance of a concentrated industry structure. In such a context two main strategic factors underpin the achievement of a sustainable competitive advantage: the entry mode and the nature of expenditures spurring technological innovation. The importance of these features reverberates in the unfolding era of cloud computing and mobile devices.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
