A central tenet of any politics of recognition is the idea that our identity as individuals or as groups is shaped by recognition or by misrecognition, but the exact content of this idea is still unclear. By focussing on widespread criticisms of any such politics, this paper casts some light on various understandings of the relation between identity and recognition, and argues that a satisfactory model of recognition is one which takes as its starting point an apparently irreconcilable conflict among individuals or groups and, through a process of negotiation over identities, turns it into a case of successful reciprocal recognition.

Abstract

A central tenet of any politics of recognition is the idea that our identity as individuals or as groups is shaped by recognition or by misrecognition, but the exact content of this idea is still unclear. By focussing on widespread criticisms of any such politics, this paper casts some light on various understandings of the relation between identity and recognition, and argues that a satisfactory model of recognition is one which takes as its starting point an apparently irreconcilable conflict among individuals or groups and, through a process of negotiation over identities, turns it into a case of successful reciprocal recognition.
