The Algerian poet Si Mohand ou-Mhand (1848 - 1905), considered to be the greatest Kabyle poet, is best known for two aspects of his poetic production, amorous and passionate during his youth, but proud and rebellious of his maturity. When the revolt of Kabylia in 1871 was crushed by France, which imposed a new order, replacing the traditional elite (to which the family of Si Mohand belonged) by mean and obedient individuals, the poet decided not to leave the country at the cost of being forced to lead a "cursed" life, adapting to precarious and low-paid jobs, moving on foot from one village to another and indulging in transgression (alcohol, kif, gambling ...). However, he continued to chastise the cowardice of his contemporaries, composing a quantity of marvelous poems that described his misfortunes and his vicissitudes, which he shared with many of his compatriots. Although his celebrity is linked to material experiences and to the rejection of traditional practices of religion, the poetry of Si Mohand reveals a deep intimate tension towards the spiritual, inheritance of his Sufi education, which manifests itself in several circumstances of his life, until at last moments. This paper aims to analyze the traits that bring out this personal religious sensitivity, through a choice of poems revealing the spiritual journey of the poet.
