Thanks to the data provided by the recently discovered Ibadite manuscripts, it is now possible to compare the literary works of the eastern regions of North Africa with the abundant evidence of medieval Berber coming from the west (mainly from southern Morocco). Ancient Eastern Berber was previously almost unknown due to the lack of written records, while the Western varieties were already fairly well known through many texts. This changed situation provides a new direction of research in Berberology and allows for a better understanding of the different diachronic paths taken by the Eastern and Western Berber languages in their evolution during the last centuries. This paper presents the results of a brief comparison of some features in order to identify similarities and differences between the languages spoken in the two parts of the Berber world, at the levels of lexicon, phonetics and morphosyntax

Abstract
Thanks to the data provided by the recently discovered Ibadite manuscripts, it is now possible to compare the literary works of the eastern regions of North Africa with the abundant evidence of medieval Berber coming from the west (mainly from southern Morocco). Ancient Eastern Berber was previously almost unknown due to the lack of written records, while the Western varieties were already fairly well known through many texts. This changed situation provides a new direction of research in Berberology and allows for a better understanding of the different diachronic paths taken by the Eastern and Western Berber languages in their evolution during the last centuries. This paper presents the results of a brief comparison of some features in order to identify similarities and differences between the languages spoken in the two parts of the Berber world, at the levels of lexicon, phonetics and morphosyntaxI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
