"Se il piede è lento, la mia mente è pronta": il ruolo formativo del pedagogo nella tragedia classica

There are many secondary figures who help parents to care for children, in practices and ancient representations: grandparents, mentors, nurses. This paper focuses on the figure of the mentor. First , the essay proposes a reflection on the figure of the mentor in the archaic texts: in the Homeric poems, the mentor is an estimated figure, from a prominent ghenos; he mainly plays an affective function, transmits the values, urges. Its intervention is not always effective, and its opinion is not always taken into account by the hero. Then, the paper analyzes in detail the figure of the pedagogue in the classical tragedy: this figure presents some characteristics identical to that of the Archaic period (old age and wisdom), but he also presents some different traits. He’s in fact a character of low social class, but important in the family. He assumes a very important role in the events, he performs a function of exhortation, he expresses an autonomous subjectivity. Both in archaic representations both in classical tragedies, finally, the tutor supports its protected for the whole life, and not only in the growing years . The tragedy then shows a pedagogue who plays an extremely important educational role towards the heroes and heroines.

Molte sono le figure secondarie che, nelle pratiche e nelle rappresentazioni antiche, affiancano i genitori nella cura dei figli: nonni, pedagoghi, nutrici. Il presente contributo si focalizza sulla figura del pedagogo. Dapprima, il saggio propone una breve riflessione sulla figura del tutore/pedagogo nei testi di epoca arcaica: nei poemi omerici, il pedagogo è un personaggio stimato, appartenente ad un ghenos importante e ha soprattutto una funzione affettiva, di trasmissione di valori, esortativa. Non sempre il suo intervento è efficace e il suo parere è preso in considerazione dall’eroe. In seguito, il contributo analizza dettagliatamente la figura del tutore/pedagogo nella tragedia classica: tale figura presenta alcune caratteristiche comuni a quella di epoca arcaica (l’età avanzata, la saggezza), ma anche alcuni tratti differenti. Si tratta, infatti, di un personaggio di bassa estrazione sociale, ma importante nel nucleo familiare; assume un ruolo molto rilevante nelle vicende, svolge una funzione esortativa, esprime una soggettività autonoma. Sia nelle rappresentazioni di epoca arcaica sia nelle tragedie classiche, infine, il tutore/pedagogo affianca il proprio protetto per tutta la vita, e non soltanto negli anni della crescita. La tragedia mostra quindi un pedagogo che svolge un ruolo formativo estremamente importante nei confronti degli eroi e delle eroine.
