The question of standards is discussed. Standards are documents which define the characteristics of a product, process or service. They can be international (ISO), European (EN) or national (UNI, Italy). A standard is characterised by consensuality, democracy, transparency and voluntariness. The harmonised EN standards developed at the request of the European Commission ensure the quality of goods produced and circulated in the European market. A technical standard comes into existence in four stages: initial feasibility study; drawing up the document; public inquiry; and publication.
