Is ritual possession a source for the study of slavery? In the last two decades a number of scholars have begun to pursue this line of research. The key notion is that of memory practices, i.e. non-discursive practical recollections of historical events embedded in people’s bodies and actions as much as in images, objects, landscapes and other material manifestations. This srticle provides some initial guidelines for understanding slavery in possession rituals by drawing on my research on Tchamba, a vodun component of the complex religious panorama of vodun possession cults worshipped in coastal Togo and Benin.

Abstract
Is ritual possession a source for the study of slavery? In the last two decades a number of scholars have begun to pursue this line of research. The key notion is that of memory practices, i.e. non-discursive practical recollections of historical events embedded in people’s bodies and actions as much as in images, objects, landscapes and other material manifestations. This srticle provides some initial guidelines for understanding slavery in possession rituals by drawing on my research on Tchamba, a vodun component of the complex religious panorama of vodun possession cults worshipped in coastal Togo and Benin.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
