Contemporary career construction: The role of career adaptability

Over the last decade, the rapidly changing job market has begun to demand that people more actively construct their professional lives and acquire career adaptability. In this chapter, after a presentation of the recent models and theoretical approaches that recognize the need to carefully consider the role of career adaptability to face, pursue, or accept changing career roles, we will analyze some studies that focus on the career adaptability in adolescents, young adults and temporary workers to successfully handle career transitions. In addition, a review will be presented of assessment procedures of career adaptability that can be found internationally. Lastly, in relation to the relevance of the career adaptability for youth’s career development, in this chapter we will discuss how to implement personalized forms of vocational guidance intervention aimed to increase career adaptability.
