Potatoes don't grow on trees

In this article we present a short scientific discussion based on some aspects of the biology of the potato: an active study of the plant that leads kindergarten children to make real discoveries. A group aged three to five years old were shown a large number of potatoes and were encouraged to observe and handle them. Aspects of intraspecific biodiversity were included in the discussions led by the teacher. Having planted potatoes in the vegetable garden, the children also used potatoes in indoor activities. And once the vegetative life-cycle had reached its natural end, with lots potatoes, the children made gnocchi – a return to the daily experience of potatoes as food.
