This paper provides an overview of the Rubin’s potential outcome model or counterfactual approach. More precisely, we review some special kind of regression techniques for drawing causal inference from observational data. We discuss how these methods can be usefully applied in sociological researches in order to get robust estimates of causal effects in the presence of non-observed heterogeneity.
