The presence of two independent vibronic series in photoluminescence spectra of ultrathin films of quaterthiophene grown by organic molecular beam deposition was associated with emission from two different species: one is the crystalline 4T and the other one some localized states, possibly related to disorder. Considering that the intensity of one vibronic series fades on going on with the number of films grown with the same starting material, this series is attributed to the presence of an impurity acting as traps of 4T excitation. Then, this impurity is identified as alpha-monobromoquaterthiophene (Br4T) being its presence consistent with the synthesis utilized and confirmed by thin layer chromatography and mass spectrometry. To confirm this attribution, pure Br4T was synthesized and the PL emission of Br4T films compared with the series rising at 2.52 eV in the 4T spectra. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
