Even though the introduction of noise by man into the marine environment may cause damage to marine animals, an international regulation of this form of pollution is stili lacking. During a workshop recently convened in Hamburg, a group of experts has discussed navigation, one of the sources of acoustic pollution of the marine environment. The outcome of the workshop has been a declaration by participants, establishing reasonable targets for noise reduction, over a period of 10 and 30 years, and calling on States to regulate noise-producing activities through the International Maritime Organization
