The widespread adoption of social network sites by teenagers seems to indicate that social inequalities do not impact, or at least have lessen their influence, on this matter. The article instead shows that family’s social class is still relevant in shaping teenagers’ online practices and the meanings they attach to social network sites. In the first part the article offers a literature review of the outcomes available on the topic. Afterwards it presents the findings of a qualitative research based on 53 semi-structured interviews with adolescents living in the north of Italy and representative of different social classes. The study has identified two different types of appropriation of social network sites. Adolescents from upper class families openly exhibit a detached attitude toward Facebook: they believe it is valuable when used seriously, but they are critics on many angles. Instead, their peers from lower class families are positive inclined towards the social network. They use Facebook for a meaningful part of their emotional and relation issues and adopt the site to make new friends. The relevance of these findings for the research on digital inequalities among adolescents is discussed in the conclusions.

La popolarità dei siti di social network tra gli adolescenti sembrerebbe suggerire che si tratti di un campo in cui l’influenza dell’origine sociale, se non scomparsa, si sia almeno livellata. Questo articolo mette invece in evidenza come la classe sociale della famiglia continui ad essere una variabile rilevante che influisce sull’uso e il significato che gli adolescenti attribuiscono ai siti di social network. Oltre a fornire una revisione della letteratura attualmente disponibile sull’argomento, l’articolo presenta i risultati di una ricerca qualitativa svolta con 53 interviste semi-strutturate ad adolescenti residenti nel nord Italia e rappresentativi di diverse classi sociali. Lo studio ha individuato due divergenti forme di appropriazione dei siti di social network. I ragazzi e le ragazze che frequentano il liceo e provengono dalle classi più elevate manifestano apertamente un atteggiamento di distacco: considerano Facebook uno strumento importante se usato seriamente, ma sono critici riguardo a molti aspetti. I coetanei provenienti da famiglie con minori risorse economiche e culturali sono invece positivamente disposti verso questo sito. Su Facebook estendono una parte significativa dei loro vissuti emotivi e relazionali e lo sfruttano per fare nuove conoscenze. Il significato dei risultati per il dibattito sulle disuguaglianze digitali tra gli adolescenti sarà discusso nelle conclusioni.
