This article delves into the sensitive undertaking of "triggering memories" among communities, families, and subjects affected by catastrophic events, using the collection of memories from survivors of the Vajont disaster as a case study. The intersubjective process of constructing memories needs meticulous attention to word choice, active listening, non-verbal communication, and respect for silence. The study presents three emblematic cases that underscore the relevance of cultivating trusting and reciprocal relationships between researchers and the subjects they engage with. Such relationships are pivotal in successfully producing and collecting memories.

Abstract

This article delves into the sensitive undertaking of "triggering memories" among communities, families, and subjects affected by catastrophic events, using the collection of memories from survivors of the Vajont disaster as a case study. The intersubjective process of constructing memories needs meticulous attention to word choice, active listening, non-verbal communication, and respect for silence. The study presents three emblematic cases that underscore the relevance of cultivating trusting and reciprocal relationships between researchers and the subjects they engage with. Such relationships are pivotal in successfully producing and collecting memories.
