The article moves from a comparison between the prologue of Plato’s Protagoras and Nietzsche's Untimely Meditation II (Vom Nutzen und Nachtheil der Historie für das Leben, 1874) in order to identify, among the fundamental questions of philosophy, the task of understanding the relationship, inevitably circular, subsisting between personal existence and knowledge. In the last part, looking at the problem of teaching philosophy today, it proposes a reformulation of that task in the contest of a systemic interpretations of contemporary society.
