During the post-World War II Italy witnessed what is identified as the “economic miracle”: a period characterized by strong economic growth that simultaneously laid the groundwork for environmental problems that were widely manifested in the subsequent decades. The sudden wealth acquired by the middle class also led to the democratization of practices previously a prerogative of wealthier classes, including tourism and amateur filmmaking. Thus, between the 1950s and 1960s, the figure of the cine-tourist emerged: tourists who, out of passion, filmed their vacation with small-format cameras. These vacation films, made for domestic use and preservation, have been recently rediscovered and preserved into public archives. This doctoral research investigates whether these unstructured and non-narrative visual documents can serve as academic tools, revealing previously unexplored geo-historical perspectives. To achieve this, a multidisciplinary methodology was developed, using the Ligurian coast between the 1950s and 1980s as a case study. Based on source-oriented archival research through visual grounded theory, the visual analysis was then structured into three circumscribed spheres of investigation, including a cross-analysis of metadata, a content analysis and, finally, an analysis of the environmental discourses present in a selection of films. The theoretical lenses employed are those of the environmental humanities. A theoretical framework was developed to investigate the large film corpus selected from the Archivio Nazionale del Cinema d’Impresa (and from Cinescatti, Ri-Prese and SuperOttimisti), drawing on concepts formulated by tourism studies and ecocritical geopolitics. The aim of this analysis was to comprehend the tourists’ perspective in the face of the profound socio-economic and environmental transformations, including rampant cementification, uncontrolled industrialization, and the commodification of nature as a result of consumerist and capitalist dynamics. Additionally, vacation films were compared to postcards, revealing the relationship between compositional and iconographic patterns, environmental perception, and territorial dynamics. The main outcome was the addition of a dedicated section to the GreenAtlas digital atlas.
