What in contemporary postmodern Italian society is considered an environmental conflict, in industrial Italy of the Sixties and the Seventies it could instead be considered acceptable, and be represented without offending the common aesthetic sense. Tourism is particularly significant in witnessing the change in perception towards environmental conflicts and can be studied through two types of visual narratives that were very common until a few years ago: the postcard and the home movie. From the visual analysis of both documents, it emerges that often parking lots, roads, means of transport, industrial plants, or apartment buildings – all carefully avoided in today’s tourist representations – were not perceived as objects disfiguring the landscape not even during a holiday period. Instead, they were elements testifying to the progress and development of a tourist resort.
