Scienze sociali a fumetti. Caratteristiche e affordances di un campo emergente

The article analyses the emerging field of comics-based social sciences, which includes extremely diverse experiences in terms of disciplinary background and epistemological approach. The paper emphasises the peculiarities of the language of comics and analyses its affordance for social sciences. Firstly, the focus is on the potential of comics to be an instrument of dissemination but also a research tool that contributes to changing the researcher’s gaze and influencing the data construction process; secondly, the paper highlights the ability of comics to draw attention to material, spatial and temporal aspects and, to some extent, to the intersection between subjective experiences and structural aspects of everyday life; thirdly it investigates on how the language of comics gives great visibility to the framing process that is always constitutive of research work, thus favouring a process of methodological reflexivity and encouraging a critical and active role of the reader; lastly the article analyses how comics encourage the adoption of a narrative approach that gives centrality to the collection and construction of stories, also highlighting the ambivalences and risks of this constitutive characteristic of the language of comics.

L'articolo analizza il campo emergente delle scienze sociali a fumetti, che comprende esperienze estremamente diverse per background disciplinare e approccio epistemologico. Il lavoro evidenzia le peculiarità del linguaggio dei fumetti e ne analizza le affordances per le scienze sociali. In primo luogo, si focalizza sul potenziale dei fumetti di essere uno strumento di divulgazione ma anche uno strumento di ricerca che contribuisce a cambiare lo sguardo del ricercatore e a influenzare il processo di costruzione dei dati. In secondo luogo, mette in luce la capacità dei fumetti di porre attenzione sugli aspetti materiali, spaziali e temporali e, in una certa misura, sull'intersezione tra esperienze soggettive e aspetti strutturali della vita quotidiana. In terzo luogo, indaga su come il linguaggio dei fumetti dia grande visibilità al processo di framing che è sempre costitutivo del lavoro di ricerca, favorendo così un processo di riflessività metodologica e incoraggiando un ruolo critico e attivo del lettore. Infine, l'articolo analizza come i fumetti incoraggino l'adozione di un approccio narrativo che dà centralità alla raccolta e costruzione di storie, evidenziando anche le ambivalenze e i rischi di questa caratteristica costitutiva del linguaggio dei fumetti.
