The research presented aims to contribute to understanding factors that drive the intention of new ventures that internationalize to adopt a strategy oriented to a narrow or a broad geographic scope. A sample of 636 Italian new ventures is analyzed. Results show that the scope of foreign target markets is positively related to a high level of R&D expenditure and the availability of industrial property rights. The presence of a predominantly foreign entrepreneurial team is also positively associated with the scope of target markets. The research also provides evidence of a different relevance of the studied factors according to the new venture's development level.
