Transference, itself a metaphorical concept, operates through metaphor. Conceptual metaphors for love underlie much psychoanalytic discourse about the patient-analyst relationship. We analyze a series of metaphors--e.g, love is magic, love is a collaborative work of art, love is a journey--and examine how they may function within psychoanalytic therapy. Deeply entrenched metaphors like Love is a journey and Therapy is a journey allow us to reason about love and therapy on the basis of what we already know about journeys. Metaphorical referencing to journeys commonly occur in both the narration of dreams and the general discourse.

Abstract
Transference, itself a metaphorical concept, operates through metaphor. Conceptual metaphors for love underlie much psychoanalytic discourse about the patient-analyst relationship. We analyze a series of metaphors--e.g, love is magic, love is a collaborative work of art, love is a journey--and examine how they may function within psychoanalytic therapy. Deeply entrenched metaphors like Love is a journey and Therapy is a journey allow us to reason about love and therapy on the basis of what we already know about journeys.
