The understanding of the theoretical contributions concerning the etiology and the development of coping mechanisms in the course of development is possible only in relationship with the results of the researches on this topic during adulthood. Therefore the first part of our review tackles with the evolution of the concept of coping in adulthood from that of defence mechanism and presents a synthesis of the various theoretical models proposed in the course of time. These studies have been the foundation on which coping researches in children and adolescents were built. The widely accepted conclusion is that coping strategies are flexible mechanisms that change depending on age; the influence of personality and environmental variables must be also taken into account
