Physics is the discipline that has developed in the Western world defining through history objects and methods of investigation that made it the experimental science par excellence. The motto provando e riprovando (trial and error) of the Accademia del Cimento founded in 1657 by students of Galileo is intended precisely to emphasize the importance of observation and systematic experimentation, the value of "sense experiences" in building a new vision and interpretation the world. This paper compares the meaning of experience in science, in knowledge construction by children, in research on science teaching and learning in school settings and in extra-school environments.
