In this paper I introduce some insights that came out of a detailed description of some informal economic activities conducted in Porto Alegre, Brazil. In particular, I focused the attention on fragments of life of garbage collectors and street vendors who operate in Porto Alegre. Their living and working conditions can widely differ, but, in general, their everyday lives merged a variety of severely unfavorable circumstances. This scenario, characterized by strong uncertainty and marginalization, is partly challenged by the presence of grassroots movements, that is collective attempts, promoted by informal workers, in order to improve their conditions
