It was often punished as plagium, a crime which deeply developed through centuries, since it finally encompassed several different matters, such as Kidnapping, Enslavement and Trafficking human beings, both free and slaves, adults as well as childrens.
Fonti giuridiche e patristiche testimoniano in epoca dioclezianea e tardo imperiale un diffuso traffico di esseri umani, sovente sanzionato come plagium, crimine che ha avuto nei secoli una profonda evoluzione, fino a divenire una sorta di contenitore di fattispecie diverse: il sequestro di persona, la riduzione in schiavitù ed il traffico di esseri umani, siano essi liberi o schiavi, adulti o bambini.
