Building Synthetic Indicators for Aspects of Territorial Capital

This paper aims at briefly discussing and analysing the role of intangible components of territorial capital in regional long run and short run performance, focusing on natural, cultural and human capital. This paper is organised in the following way: section 2 describes briefly the original data on 103 provinces, it provides 38 proxy indicators of which major univariate statistics and correlations are explored. Section 3 reduces the 103 italian provinces into 13 ideal types, by means of cluster analysis. Section 4 reduces the 38 indicators into 11 synthetic indicators (components), by means of a factor analysis. The final section compares and interprets results, also with reference to the mid-1990s economic position.
