This paper shows that it is always possible to find a bilinear form that makes a given linear operator symmetric. Since a variational formulation requires the symmetry of the operator we deduce a constructive method to give a variational formulation to every linear equation.In particular we apply the method to the diffusion equation. © 1974.

Abstract
