This essay analyses the rhetorical structure of the short story San Giorgio in casa Brocchi. Following Francesco Orlando's theories and technique, the author traces several figures of speech Gadda make use of to construct a symbolic net that becomes more and more intense and complex as the narration goes on. The stylistic strength of the story is closely linked to the relations arising from the author's syntactic, semantic and narrative choices. We can cast light on the intricacy of the text only by taking into due account both the rhetorical functions of each narrative element and the interaction between them
