The first results of research on the assessment of aquifer vulnerability of the Po plain are presented. The goal of this research is to produce a pollution risk map of the Po plain for planning purposes. The first step in this work has been the production of an aquifer vulnerability map using the distribution of factors that control the groundwater pollution potential: depth to water table, recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, impact of the vadose zone and conductivity of the aquifer. Data were digitized with Arc/Info and processed in raster format using ILWIS. -Authors
