The siege of Candia was a one-off in Seventeenth-century Europe, because of its twenty-year duration, but also due to its distance from Venice. The article analyses how the specificity of the siege affected the measures taken by the besieged, with special reference to sheltering of the civil population within the city walls, the distinction between of useful and useless persons, the modification of social relations in the city of Candia.
