Recently, a growing number of philosophers and linguists turned their attention to slurs, derogatory epithets that insult a person inasmuch as (s)he belongs to a target group. A slur such as ‘faggot’ makes reference to the group of homosexuals, and conveys (hatred and) derogation. We review the main theoretical approaches that have been proposed to account for this ‘double meaning’ of slurs, highlighting their relationship with philosophy of language and linguistics’ main themes.

Abstract
Recently, a growing number of philosophers and linguists turned their attention to slurs, derogatory epithets that insult a person inasmuch as (s)he belongs to a target group. A slur such as ‘faggot’ makes reference to the group of homosexuals, and conveys (hatred and) derogation. We review the main theoretical approaches that have been proposed to account for this ‘double meaning’ of slurs, highlighting their relationship with philosophy of language and linguistics’ main themes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
