We present an analysis of rockfall risk for people passing along the national road below a hazardous rocky cliff. First, we assessed the probability of loss of life at the location where a deadly accident occurred in 2011. This risk is very low, and acceptable in terms of individual risk. Then, we calculated the potential loss of life (i.e., the expected number of fatalities per year) along the entire road sector starting from probabilistic hazard curves. As a result, we show that total potential loss of life lies within the ALARP zone, suggesting the need for the definition of acceptable risk levels by local/national authorities. .

Abstract
We present an analysis of rockfall risk for people passing along the national road below a hazardous rocky cliff. First, we assessed the probability of loss of life at the location where a deadly accident occurred in 2011. This risk is very low, and acceptable in terms of individual risk. Then, we calculated the potential loss of life (i.e., the expected number of fatalities per year) along the entire road sector starting from probabilistic hazard curves. As a result, we show that total potential loss of life lies within the ALARP zone, suggesting the need for the definition of acceptable risk levels by local/national authorities. .I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
